Why the world needs to listen to Unlocking Our Voices

Silence is no longer an option for the global Black diaspora

by Greg Fuller,  Founder of Unlocking Our Voices

The worst thing we can do is stay silent. When we don’t speak, no one can understand our suffering. No one can feel our pain. No one can hear our struggles, our courage, our pride, or our heritage. Silence doesn’t just isolate us; it harms us. It hurts the people who came before us, those who fought for a better today. And it fails the generations still to come, who deserve so much more.

Silence hides the truth of the Black diaspora—its past and its present—both at home and across the globe. When we speak of the Black diaspora, I mean the full, rich, and diverse family of Black communities: African Americans, Afro-Asians, Afro-Latinos, Afro-Caribbeans, and native African peoples. As such, I am no longer willing to be silent.

Why does this podcast exist?

Unlocking Our Voices is a podcast born from this commitment. We focus on the Black diaspora—its stories, struggles, culture, and global realities. Our aim is to connect members of this vast community in new, meaningful ways. Through these conversations, we trace our roots, examine how the past shapes the present, and imagine how we can collectively shape the future.

This is a space for growth—social, political, economic, and physical. And it begins with dialogue: honest, face-to-face conversations with a diverse group of guests from around the world.

Shared struggles = collective strength

Our cultures may vary from place to place, but we are connected by shared realities. Marginalization. Racism. Erasure. While others may be able to ignore these things, we live them daily—in different ways, but with familiar weight.

We are strongest when we come together. When we hold space for hard conversations. When we build platforms that center our experiences, our truths, and our people. This is about laying the foundation for Black institutions that serve and uplift Black lives. It starts with dialogue. It moves toward action.

Building on the legacy of Black history

Unlocking Our Voices builds on the legacy of Black history initiatives, but takes a step further—inviting real-time conversations that don’t just highlight challenges, but seek solutions. We’ll tackle issues deeply embedded in everyday life. But this isn’t a one-sided effort. It takes a village. Our listeners are part of that village. Your feedback, your stories, your voices matter.

What we talk about

The podcast will address racial profiling and systemic discrimination. We’ll look at how Black and brown-skinned people face barriers in education, employment, housing, healthcare, and beyond. And we’ll center the brilliance and resilience of Black women; acknowledging not only their labor, but their legacy and leadership in family, community, and civilization.

While we are based in the United States, our reach is intentionally global. Because the Black diaspora exists everywhere, and so do its struggles—and triumphs.

We’ll also shine a light on the contributions of African descendants in Latin America and the Caribbean, where music, literature, religion, and language reflect a deep African presence. We’ll explore how Black communities in Europe, Latin America, and Asia continue to fight for visibility, identity, and rights. And we’ll celebrate the gains, the victories, and the progress being made, even in the face of persistent injustice.

This podcast is a reflection of our global family. It’s a reminder that Black communities in the Americas are not alone. We share common ground with our brothers and sisters around the world. And we share a responsibility—to uphold the values of freedom, justice, racial equality, and African unity.

A space for us—and for all

Our focus will always remain on Black lives, Black voices, and Black liberation. But we also believe in dialogue across communities. This is not a space for hate or division. We welcome all who come in good faith. Those who identify as Asiatic, Caucasian, Latino, or other racial and ethnic groups are not excluded here. But our lens remains intentionally and unapologetically Black.

I believe that spaces like "Unlocking Our Voices" are very important. This podcast highlights that the voice should not be silenced and that sharing stories helps strengthen the community and raise awareness. Although I do not know the full history or culture of Africa, I understand that there is great diversity within the Black community and that everyone faces similar challenges, such as racism and exclusion. I am struck by how it connects different Black communities and also includes people from diverse backgrounds, fostering solidarity and understanding. Discussing topics like discrimination in education, work, and health, as well as recognizing the contributions of Black women, is essential to making these realities visible and promoting change. This kind of initiative helps us appreciate the diversity and struggles of Black communities around the world, fostering empathy and racial justice.
